Grid United is a mission-driven company aiming to solve the largest barrier to a cleaner, more reliable grid by developing new long-haul transmission lines in the United States. Established in 2021 by proven leaders in the power and renewables industry, Grid United is developing utility-scale, electric, multi-state transmission projects that will provide long-term economic benefits to communities across the country, improved grid resiliency for American homes and businesses, and cost savings for electricity consumers.
The Position
Grid United has numerous large-scale transmissions projects underway and is currently identifying and studying additional prospective projects across North America. As these projects progress and the company grows, Grid United seeks to augment its team with an energetic and entrepreneurial Director of Human Resources. The successful candidate will provide leadership in building a sophisticated Human Resources function for Grid United with the objective of continuously improving HR efficiency and effectiveness to support Grid United’s operations, strategic objectives, and growth. Working out of the company’s office in Houston, Texas, the Director of Human Resources will collaborate with a small and growing team of talented experts in the transmissions and renewables fields to shape and guide the HR function of this growing company. Grid United is open to part-time candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization’s human resource function and performance including, but not limited to, employee communications, employee handbook, compensation levels and job descriptions, recruiting, performance management, professional development, total rewards & recognition, organization effectiveness, and related programs
- Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning of new programs/strategies and regulatory action as those items impact the attraction, motivation, development and retention of the people resources of the company
- Establish credibility throughout the organization with management and employees by being an effective listener and problem solver of people issues while responding effectively to sensitive inquires or complaints
- Develop and employ metrics to align with specific business outcomes and provide defined metrics for measuring effectiveness of HR programs in driving organizational performance and containing costs
- Advise company on strategies and best practices to promote and foster diversity and establish an inclusive and welcoming work environment
- Oversees employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations in accordance with company policy; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as providing reasonable accommodations, investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations
- Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law
- Manage external consultants, including a professional employer organization and external recruiter
- Performs other duties as assigned
Ideal Candidate Description
The ideal candidate is a well-rounded human resources professional with expertise across all aspects of the HR function – from Training and Development, Recruitment and Retention, Orientation and On-Boarding, to Organizational Development, Performance Management, Workers Compensation, Policies and Procedures, Payroll, Employee Benefit Plans, and Employee Relations. He or she is a hands-on leader who enjoys the creative aspects of developing best-in-class HR operations to further the growth of the company and professional skill sets of Grid United colleagues. He or she will be expected to approach human resource issues with a high degree of creativity and implement effective recruitment and retention strategies, while also defining roles and responsibilities throughout all levels in the organization.
Ideal Experience:
- 5- 10 years generalist experience across the HR function in a growing organization
- Experience in the renewables or transmissions sector is preferred
- Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree and/or MBA is preferred
- Knowledge of all rules and regulations around human resources, including FMLA and EEO
- Fostering a cooperative work environment, and motivating others to drive continuous improvement
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
- Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and talent management systems
